The Most Common Sports Injuries

There are so many benefits to playing sports and taking part in fitness activities whether that’s a kick-about with friends or a solo run. However, sport may also be putting your body at risk without you realising it.

For the most part, injuries are unavoidable and can happen to anyone no matter how careful you are.

With this in mind, we list some of the most common sports injuries people come to Essex Physiotherapy Clinic with.

Strains

Strains may sound pretty minor but they can be incredibly painful. Strains are probably the most common type of sports injury and this is because the body uses so many muscles and tendons when we exercise.

Frequent muscle strains include pulled hamstrings, pulled groin muscles and strained quads. Lots of strains are pretty small and heal naturally. The best way to reduce the risk of strained muscles and tendons is to warm up and stretch before engaging in strenuous activity.

Sprains

When ligaments are stressed in the wrong way, they can pull or tear and this is what causes a sprain. Ankle sprains are often the most frequent type of sprain then followed closely by knee sprains, wrist and elbow sprains. Sprains can be incredibly painful and take longer to heal than strains, and sometimes call for immobilization to safeguard you from further injuries.

Knee injuries

The knee is a complex part of the body and make no mistake, knee injuries can be painful and debilitating, sometimes requiring surgery to correct. The knee experiences a great deal of impact and wear-and-tear in just about every type of sport. Cartilage tears, dislocation and fractures are very common for the knee.

Fractures

Impact and contact sports can lead to fractures of the bone. This calibre of injury can be excruciating and takes weeks to heal, requiring a period of immobilization to heal. In some cases, it may even require surgery to correct. Fractures are a risk with lots of contact sports but you can lower the risk by wearing the appropriate equipment and warming up.
